Hylozoism
I have been fascinated by the ancient word hylozoism, which means life from material. This is an evocative and beautiful word that speaks to how I create and design interactive experience using physical materials. I integrate soft materials and electronic components: molding flexible silicone with microcontrollers and other electronic components, sewing/knitting/crocheting electronic components, and embedding muscle wires in garments. Materials move, glow, vibrate, and respond in unexpected ways.
This also shares ideas with the concept of biomimicry.
Biomimicry (from bios, meaning life, and mimesis, meaning to imitate) is a new discipline that studies nature’s best ideas and then imitates these designs and processes to solve human problems. Studying a leaf to invent a better solar cell is an example. I think of it as innovation inspired by nature.
I particularly explore this idea focusing on kinetic movement of materials. This can be actuated by muscle wires and motors.
